The Journey to School

It’s Labor Day, a.k.a. the last glorious day of freedom before teachers and students return to school, so really I should be on a beach somewhere sipping on a summery cocktail and such, but instead I’m finding myself working today to get my life in order and ready for the school year to begin.

I know that sounds awful, and I promise I will take a break at some point today (and that I did relax the rest of the weekend), but I just came across an article that humbled me in a pretty powerful way and made me realize that the things I complain about with regard to the school year starting again are not actually that significant when you look at a bigger picture.

This article is mostly photographs, and it sheds light on the treacherous journeys that many students take just to get to school each day.  The education that most of us take for granted is such a huge deal for kids who don’t have easy access to a school, and I hope that teachers and students will take a look at this article – and the UNESCO report that is included in it via a link – and take a second to count our blessings… even as the pressures and frustrations of the impending school year start to take over.

Here’s to another school year!  Hope the start of it goes well for everyone!
